Simplifying microsurgery with a simple, efficient microvascular connection device

Founder and CE – Nandoun Abeysekera.
The biggest investment opportunities often come from eliminating our most limited resource: time. That’s why we invested in Avasa. Investing $2m from Emerge Fund 4 in their pre-Series A round, to lead the raise alongside a further $2.9m from other local investors.
The story of Avasa
Avasa is the brainchild of its founders' own experience of the complexity of microvascular anastomosis.
Microvascular anastomosis, the reconstructive technique utilised to reconnect veins and arteries, has become a standardised global practice with high success rates, courtesy of surgical microscopes and the development and adoption of sutureless devices. Its use has helped accelerate the adoption of free-flap surgery of which 100’s of thousands are performed each year.
However, existing sutureless device solutions available to clinicians address only half of the clinical workload associated with the surgery, and their developers have tried and failed to adapt them to address the other half.
The solution
Avasa has developed a highly elegant device that hides immense complexity behind its form. It removes the need for hand suturing of low-compliance arteries and is therefore estimated to save 15-45minutes per surgery. Beyond the immediate benefit within existing surgical volumes, this also has the potential to further accelerate the adoption of free flap surgery.
The investment case
By designing its device to directly address an unaddressed problem in a growing segment that is already aware of the benefits of adopting innovation, Avasa is well positioned to efficiently bring its device to market.
Movac’s investment is expected to enable the company to advance through FDA clearance and into early market adoption for its first product.
Final thoughts
We're proud to stand by Nandoun Abeysekera as he brings the company’s first device to market. Movac’s Senior Investment Manager, Byron van Vugt, joined the Avasa board post-investment.
