Our Legacy

Movac was formed in 1998 when NZ's venture capital industry was still in its infancy. While the country was producing exceptional research, engineering talent and entrepreneurial ambition, there was little access to growth capital and commercial expertise.

Recognising this, founders Phil McCaw, Richard Abbott, Mark Richter and Sharon Bryant established Movac, investing their own capital to bridge the gap between innovation and commercial success.

In 2011, Managing Partner Phil McCaw alongside a new generation of Partners in David Beard, Mark Vivian and Mark Stuart, raised Movac Fund 3 from institutional and high-net worth investors, transforming Movac into a professional fund manager that combined private investment discipline with deep engagement in the local technology community.

As NZ’s economy matured, so too did Movac. Over the following decades, the firm became reputable for a more hands-on investment practice, providing substantial capital whilst partnering closely with Founders and CEOs on governance, strategy, leadership and international growth.

Movac’s investor base includes some of the countries top institutional investors, such as Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation (NZ Super), NZVIF / NZGCP, Ngāi Tahu, Annuitas, Kiwi Wealth / Fisher Funds, Generate and more, alongside wealth managers such as Forsyth Barr, JBWere, Craigs Investment Partners and a loyal base of direct high-net worth investors.

Today, Movac’s five active Partners; Mark Vivian, David Beard, Mark Stuart, Jason Graham and Fiona Foster, bring decades of collective experience and a depth of complementary expertise across early-stage venture, growth capital and secondary investment.

After more than 25 years, Founding Partner Phil McCaw acts as Advisor Emeritus to the Movac team and remains deeply engaged in the wider industry.
