Creating time-critical stroke intervention with portable neuroimaging device

The story of Wellumio

Dr Sergei Obruchkov, Dr Shieak Tzeng, and the Wellumio team have created a portable stroke-detection device called Axana. 

Stroke is a significant global health issue, both due to its immediate and long-term effects on patients. However, it is difficult to identify and categorise strokes, and their type dictates the treatment provided to patients. 

Critical evidence shows that the earlier a stroke patient is treated, the better their outcome. However, current practices require patients to undergo an MRI or CT scan, resulting in only 30% of patients receiving treatment within “The Golden Hour” of admission to the hospital.

The solution

Unlike a normal MRI machine, Axana is small enough to bring to a patient and uses permanent magnets and proprietary scanning technology to quickly scan the patients brain, characterising whether a stroke has occurred, and if so, its type and severity.

Wellumio’s technology will help stroke patients receive treatment much faster - saving lives and improving recovery worldwide.

Having successfully secured funding, Wellumio is now focused on progressing its working prototypes and clinical trials.
